Helping Peoples With Disabilities

Shravasti is one of the 112 aspirational districts in the country. In the NFHS Round- 5 data (2019-21), the district was reported to have the highest head count of multi- dimensional poverty in the state of Uttar Pradesh, second only to its neighbour, Bahraich. About 50 % of the district’s population was reported to suffer from some form of multi- dimensional deprivation. About 5% of the district’s population suffers from various degrees of disability. Poverty & disability are mutually perpetuating; on the one hand, people with disabilities have a higher risk of becoming poor given their lower levels of access to health care, education, employment, and social participation. On the other hand, poor individuals are more likely to become disabled, as a result of their lack of access to preventive health care services, under nutrition and their riskier living conditions.

The District Disability Rehabilitation Centre was established in the district in the year 2013-14 under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India ( hereafter called the Ministry ). It, however came to function to its full potential only in January 2023, when the Indian Red Cross Society, Shravasti branch, was revived and it became the driving force behind the operation of the DDRC

DDRC Shravasti is one of the few fully functional district rehabilitation centres for the specially abled persons, in the state of Uttar Pradesh with a definitive calendar of activities, intervention specialists on its roll, and equipment & instruments for disability identification. It is also the only DDRC in the Awadh region to be supported by the Ministry through grant–in-aid to enable the centre to meet its recurring expenses.
